Morrowind Interview
Bethseda Softworks’s Elder Scrolls RPG games Arena and Daggerfall have been highly praised for its solid gameplay. Now the upcoming third game in the fantasy series, Morrowind, is not only looking to have entertaining open ended gameplay but terrific graphics as well as a construction kit for mod makers. It will also become the first of the Elder Scrolls game to appear on a console system (Microsoft’s Xbox to be exact) as well as the PC platform. HomeLAN got a chance to chat briefly with the game’s project director Todd Howard to find out more about Morrowind. HomeLAN - Has Morrowind's design changed since its was first conceived or has it stayed pretty much the same?
Todd Howard - It’s stayed pretty much the same. We’ve added a few things, removed a few things, and changed some others. But the majority is exactly as we planned. I have three main rules of game development. Two are relevant here. One is that great games are played, not made. That means that you need to play your own game, and change it as needed to make it great. The other is when you design a game, define the experience, don’t define a list of features. So with this game, the experience is playing another role, in another world, and that hasn’t changed.
