Alien vs. Predator Interview

SG: Of the three AvP species, it's often been said that the Marine is by far the easiest to work with given that his style of play isn't too dissimilar from most other mainstream first-person shooters. But of the three species, the Marine game is certainly the one that begs for the "terror" factor Aliens and Predators aren't renowned for showing (or even feeling) fear, whilst humans are obviously much more susceptible to panic and terror. With this in mind, what were the primary objectives you had in mind when developing the Marine game specifically?

WW: We had a very clear vision for what we wanted for the Marines, a combination of terror and teamwork. We wanted to capture the feel of Apone's team moving through Hadley's Hope and through the atmospheric processing plant. The Marine from the original AvP fit this nicely. On top of this, we added the Marine battery system and flare carrying system to heighten the tension. You can light the world, but only in short bursts and always knowing that something is waiting for you just beyond the darkness. The tools work into this as well. With the torch and hacking device, you face situations where you must lower your weapon and focus on another task knowing that Aliens could arrive at any second.
